The AJ Brown Trade: Graded

A short insight into one of the biggest moves of the offseason so far.

Summary:

The worst kept secret in the NFL is finally official, Superstar, Super Bowl Champ and 3x All Pro Wide Receiver AJ Brown is a New England Patriot. After months of rumours swirling around the superstar, both teams finally settled on the details to send Brown to his favourite team growing up. I will be giving my full thoughts on the trade from both sides, and talk about some good and bad for both.

The Eagles: B+

The Philadelphia Eagles finally end the AJ Brown era in The City of Brotherly Love (and Shoves) with a trade with New England this Monday, in return they acquire a 2028 1st Round Pick and a 2027 5th. Thats a pretty decent return for a Wide Receiver who is turning 29 at the end of this month, who’s flaws have been fully to show this last season, with many bad drops and occasional zero effort plays. I like this return for Philadelphia, especially if the rumours about a potential deal with Las Vegas for DE Maxx Crosby are correct. This places a lot of pressure on DeVonta Smith and 2026 1st rounder Makai Lemon to fill the void Browns absence will create, although Smith has already shown flashes of potential superstar calibre ability throughout his 5 years with the team.

Overall, while the Eagles receiving room takes a hit with this move, their WR core of Smith, Lemon, recently acquired WR Dontayvion Wicks and WR Marquise Brown is incredibly solid, not to mention TE Dallas Goedert, who just resigned with the city this offseason after a productive season last year. Alongside the aid in team chemistry this move brings, offloading someone who was very publicly criticizing his team and teammates, I don’t see this trade as a negative at all, but of course the downside is that the Eagles, as well as Jalen Hurts, lose their WR1 and best deep threat. As much as Philadelphia has never been a pass first offense, that blow will still sting greatly this season.

Patriots: A-

Vrabel finally got his guy, and Drake Maye finally has a real star target to throw to. After months of waiting and a whole scandal involving Dianna Russini, AJ Brown is finally a Patriot. This is a very good trade for New England, they get their young superstar QB a superstar, All Pro Calibre Wide Receiver, to pair next to recent free agency acquisition Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte and a potential resigning of Stefon Diggs. It wasn’t cheap, but if Brown plays anything like he did over the last 4 seasons it will be well worth it, as he was one of the best receivers against man coverage and an incredible deep ball threat.

I think this trade gives New England a potential top 7 offense, and if TreVeyon Henderson can play consistently decent, and Will “T-Rex” Campbell remains healthy then the skies the limit for them. I think this is a trade with a ton of upside for the Patriots in their push for a superbowl but it does come with its potential downsides.

Brown is not an easy player to keep happy, he was frustrated even throughout the Eagles dominant stretch to end 2024, because he wasn’t getting enough targets and receptions, as HB Saquon Barkley took the reigns. He admitted to spreading rumours to the press and has made his character a very prominent concern to many. He also began to show signs of regression last season, dropping multiple balls, including a few crucial ones in the Eagles 23-19 loss to San Francisco in the 2026 Wildcard. Overall this is still a very good trade for New England and Pats fans should be very excited for the season to come.
